There are a variety of different treatment options for women in need.
Women who have a trauma history and/ or other personal and/ or sensitive narratives to work through may prefer undergoing treatment in an all-women’s rehab environment. Studies show that women in treatment that attend a female-only rehab program do well and sometimes even better than in a co-ed environment. The process for locating a rehab for women can seem overwhelming. To narrow down the options, consider asking the following questions to any prospective treatment program:
- What is the overall therapeutic philosophy and methodology, and what types of treatment modalities are used in the treatment plans in your program? A high-quality residential treatment program should employ a range of psychotherapeutic modalities to create a tailored treatment program that focuses on each of the nuanced needs of its female residents. Some of the therapeutic modalities that are frequently used in women’s residential treatment programs could include but are not limited to CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), expressive arts therapies, narrative therapy, existential therapy, DBT (dialectical behavior therapy), relational therapy, group therapy and more.
- What are the level of licensure clinical staff members, group leaders, and residential staff members hold? Find out the accreditation of the facility itself as well as the clinical staff.
- What is the current peer group culture like among the participants?
- When will space be available?
- What are the costs? What do these costs cover?
- Do you provide aftercare? If so, what kinds of aftercare and/ or support services are offered?
In situations where, for whatever reason, a women’s only rehab program is not available, it is helpful to bear in mind that many co-ed programs have gender-specific accommodations and/ or activities. Ask a prospective co-ed rehab program if they offer female-only therapy groups and/ or include any other women-only activities that may be scheduled on a regular basis.
