Sober coaches are a nonclinical resource and do not provide treatment or diagnosis for addiction.
Sober coaches are not intended to replace substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment programs but are meant to add an additional layer of support to those in the early stages of recovery. The job of a sober coach is to help their clients identify triggers, create coping strategies, find resources, guide them to make decisions that support their sobriety, learn to navigate their newfound life in sobriety, and provide accountability in helping them reach their goals. Below are several suggestions and considerations to bear in mind to help you find a sober coach that best suits your nuanced recovery needs.
- Get a recommendation: most substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment programs can recommend reputable sober coaches. Referrals for sober coaches could also come from asking family, friends, your primary care doctor, or even a local clinic.
- Qualifications and Certifications: Sober coaches are not required to hold any certifications or complete any specialized training, as there are no federal or state licensing standards for sober coaches. Sober coaching is an entirely unregulated profession and there are no formal standardized sober coaching platforms that have been evaluated by any type of clinical research trial. There are some related certifications that can be earned through national and state accrediting bodies, such as the National Certified Peer Specialist (NCPS) certification. The National Certified Peer Specialist certification is a voluntary, examination-based certification that allows peers to demonstrate a high level of experience and competencies in peer support.
- Setting: sober coaches can facilitate sessions via phone, online or in-person; they may work with their clients in their client’s environment (e.g., in their home, outdoors, at the gym, at recovery meetings, or other locations that are mutually agreed upon). Make sure a prospective sober coach is able to accommodate and support you in your desired setting.
- Availability: The time needed to effect a meaningful change varies depending upon the client, so it is important to make sure a sober coach has ample availability to take you on as a client.
Every sober coach will have a somewhat unique approach. While keeping in mind that you are utilizing a sober coach for their expertise and support, it is imperative to select a sober coach that aligns with your expectations and needs.
