An article in Psychology Today refers to a variety of studies all of which conclude that the first ninety days in recovery are when the greatest percentage of relapses occur.
Sober coaches can prove an important linchpin in the continuum of care and their work can take many forms. They can transport clients to or from a treatment program or accompany them to high-risk events (e.g., weddings, family reunions, etc.). They can assume the role of a 24-hour companion and reside with a client for a limited period of intense monitoring, or provide open access to on-call mentoring by spending hours a day in-person or on the phone offering the client support navigating in-the-moment challenges. Sober coaches offer a client shared understanding, encouragement, accountability, and wisdom. According to Fox Business, sober coaches charge between $900 to $1,800 per day. Other sources suggest that the cost of a sober coach can range between $100 to $400 per hour. The exact cost of sober coaching services will depend on several contributing factors such as the coach’s level of expertise, experience, services, location, duration, and needs of the client.
It is important to bear in mind that sober coaches are not intended to take the place of substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment programs but are meant to add an additional layer of support to those in the early stages of recovery. Sober coaches are not required to hold any certifications or complete any specialized training, as there are no federal or state licensing standards for sober coaches. No formal standardized sober coaching platform has been evaluated by any type of clinical research trial. Unless a sober coach has a graduate degree and state licensure as a therapist, counselor, or physician they cannot provide commensurate services. Because this is a completely unregulated field, prior to hiring sober coaches it is imperative to conduct proper due diligence.
