The growing field of health and wellness coaching uses scientifically-backed approaches such as motivational interviewing and positive psychology to offer people individualized support to cultivate sustainable healthy behavior changes.

Health coaches focus on goal-setting strategies and accountability to help people recreate a growth mindset. Depending on the needs of the client, health coaches can work on nutritional changes, stress management skills, bedtime routines, improve relationship skills, teach skills to become an active advocates with physicians, and help clients carve out more time for exercise and movement. Coaching appears to be as effective when administered remotely by phone or on the Internet as compared with face-to-face coaching. This provides great flexibility, as coaching can be facilitated in person, over the phone, or via videoconferencing, and is a primary reason for the development of health coach apps.According to the Institute for Health Policy and Innovation at the University of Michigan, “mobile apps make it possible to track everything from exercise and calories to blood pressure and blood sugar, and use the information to stay on target with health goals or managing a chronic condition.” Health coach apps are designed to offer clients a selection of engaging in an array of different methods to improve overall wellbeing. There is no simple answer to the question: are health coaching apps effective? Rather the answer is variable because there are a plethora of different apps available and every person is unique, each with nuanced and distinct needs. Some people may prefer working in person with a health coach and may find working through an app to achieve health goals ineffective. Others may find health coaching apps highly effective and motivating. It is important to note that though most health coach apps include tracking capabilities, and some may offer specialized support with different health-related issues, they cannot and should not be used as a replacement for medical professionals or related health care providers.
